Note:
The table above contains patch files for the game in .UPS format. To play, you must apply the patch using a patching tool and your own legally obtained copy of the Pokemon Emerald ROM.

We do not provide ROM files. These patch files are not directly playable and require proper patching before use.

What’s new in v1.2.1 – Bug Fix Update

  • Rival name should no longer be reset if you save for the first time after naming him. If you were affected by this bug, you can now change your rival’s name at the TV in the name rater’s house in goldenrod.
  • Updating will no longer revert your shiny colors setting to vanilla. If you were affected by this bug, you can now toggle the setting at the bookshelf in the name rater’s house in goldenrod.
  • A variety of nuzlocke, randomizer, and mono type fixes
  • Random items won’t begin until after receiving balls from Elm’s aide
  • No EVs challenge will now end after Red
  • Synchronize now works on fishing (removed a little known chain fishing mechanic)
  • Text, grammer, spelling fixes
  • Fixed partner battle text
  • Fixed very rare Totodile of Terror bug that caused crashing on the first wild battle
  • Fixed the reception gate door animation on the route 28 side
  • Replaced some location music for parity with HGSS
  • Rocket hideout statues should turn off after getting the HM from Lance
  • Pond battle background fixed
  • Violet city poliwag is no longer omnipotent
  • Removed Togepi from starter pool on randomizer or mono type challenge to prevent softlocks
  • Fixed secret swinub cutscene game crash in ice path
  • Updated some trainer overworld sprites to match their battle pics
  • Added wall clock to lake of rage house to prevent temporary softlock
  • Synced time based evolution time ranges to the 1.2 time of day ranges

How to Update From Older to Newer Version (Saves are Compatible)

This process differs depending on your emulator. You will need to do some or all of the following.

  • Navigate to a route or pokemon center before saving your game. This is very important.
  • Complete the patching process above on another legally obtained copy of Pokemon – Emerald Version (U)**
  • Back up or export your old save file. The location of the .sav file will vary depending on your emulator
  • Rename your .sav file to match your new ROM name
  • Move or import the .sav to the correct directory of the new ROM
  • Start the game and confirm your save appears

How to Patch & Play

To patch and play Pokemon Heart & Soul, you’ll need the following:

What You Need:

  • A clean Pokemon Emerald ROM (TrashMan version is strongly recommended)
  • A patching tool (we recommend ROM Patcher JS – works on all devices, no installation needed)
  • The patch file (linked in the table above)

How to Patch Using ROM Patcher JS

  1. Go to the ROM Patcher JS
  2. Under “ROM File”, select your clean Pokemon Emerald (TrashMan) ROM
  3. Under “Patch File”, select the Pokemon Heart & Soul patch you downloaded
  4. Click “Apply Patch”
  5. The patched ROM will download automatically
  6. Locate the file in your Downloads folder
  7. Open it with a GBA emulator to start playing

How to Finally Play the Game

  1. Complete the patching process using ROM Patcher JS
  2. Locate the patched ROM file in your Downloads folder
  3. Open your preferred GBA emulator (e.g., Lemuroid, mGBA, Delta)
  4. Load the patched ROM
  5. Start playing Pokemon Heart & Soul!

    First of all, congrats to the developers of this incredible game, I never thought I would enjoy Johto this much again since the GBA days, everything is perfect, thank you so much.

    I have a few questions:

    * Once I complete the Pokédex, either the National or the Johto one, is there any kind of event where you get a diploma? How do you trigger it?
    * There are some doors I could not open or I am not sure how to open them. For example, in New Bark Town, on the upper floor of Elm’s house, is there anything there? Or in Ecruteak City, at the entrance to the Twin Tower there is a small house where, in the post game, a Gym Leader waits for you there and then goes to the dojo, but that door stays locked. How do you open it?
    * If I wanted to have the game updated, is that possible? How do I do it? Do I patch the ROM again? I would not like to lose my save.

      My game crashes when I try to catch Beldum on the safari zone and use Flash Cannon. I’m using retroarch with the GBA GpSp core, should I switch cores are wait for an update?

    I have a question. why did my svae suddenly erase itself. No id idn’t do anythign to vcause the erasure. i juts shut the system down liek always and when i went back, gone. 6 weeks of work, gone.

    I used the patcher just as said with Trashmans version of emerald but it goes to the heart and soul screen main screen and just repeats it every time I hit A.

    Hi, I did all the above instructions, but when I start the game, It’s always in a loop starting the game over and over. When the “Pokemon Hearth & Soul” screen appears, the emulator reset the game and start all over, and it’s a infinite loop.

    Do you know how I can fix it?

    This might not be the place to post this, but, is anyone else getting a persistant fuzz/buzz sounds behind all the music? It’s not horrible, but it is enough to be distracting. Is there a fix for this, or could this be the result of me loading it wrong. I am using it on mGBA through Retroarch

    I need some help. I’ve tried patching a dozen times using trash man emerald rom and it just keeps downloading emerald and not H&S. The files of H&S I’m downloading don’t say zip. Idk if that’s a big deal?

    Hello, I wish to play the game in a flash cart or super cart, but it always fail to load when I try running the patched emerald, do I need to do something else for it to work? or is it not just really possible?

    Hallo Leute.
    Erstmal das ist ein Top ROM Hack. Ich habe nur eine Frage. Gibt es irgendeine Möglichkeit Lugia zu fangen. Ich hab die Silberflügel nie bekommen und vor dem Eingang steht ein Tentoxa auf Level 100. Wenn man es besiegt hat es wieder 100% HP. Danke schon Mal.
