  2. Find the Rocket Grunt again on Nugget Bridge.
  3. Battle and defeat him.
  4. Return to Misty’s Gym.

Mechanics

How do I evolve trade Pokemon, Togekiss, or later-generation evolutions?

Evolution details are listed in your in-game Pokedex and in the official spreadsheet under the Evolutions / Breeding section.

You can also check:
Evolution & Breeding

Because Pokemon Heart & Soul currently uses Gen 3 items only, several evolutions that normally require Gen 4 or later items have been changed.

How do I get Nature Mints?

Nature Mints become available at the Goldenrod Flower Shop after defeating Morty.

For more item information, check:
Items Location

How do I get special Poké Balls?

Bring berries to Kurt in Azalea Town.

These balls work differently from the vanilla games and are type-effective. For more information, check the Berries tab in the official spreadsheet or visit:
Berries Location & Info

The only other Poké Balls in the game are regular Poké Balls, Great Balls, Ultra Balls, Master Balls, and Premier Balls.

Is broken Emerald RNG fixed?

Yes. Pokémon Heart & Soul fixes broken Emerald RNG, and soft resetting changes your seed.

Can I save state reset for shinies, natures, or EVs?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended.

When you reload a save state, you are usually reloading the same RNG seed. That means if you repeat the same actions at the same time, you will often hit the same few frames again and again.

To make save state resetting work, you would need to change your actions slightly each time, which is usually slower and less efficient. Soft resetting is easier and more effective.

Can I change the time of day?

Yes. You can change the clock from a Pokémon Center.

However, changing the time may lock you out of certain daily events for 24 hours.

How do I switch a Pokémon’s ability?

Talk to the Ability Expert in the Saffron Dojo.

Please note that this is still Gen 3-based, so some later-generation abilities do not exist. For example, Scyther does not have Technician, and there are no Hidden Abilities.

Can we change a Pokémon’s IVs or EVs?

IVs cannot be changed.

EVs can be reduced using certain berries available in Kanto. Their exact locations are listed in the Berries tab of the official spreadsheet and on the website here:
Berries Location & Info

Does the EXP Share S stack with the EXP Share Key Item?

Yes, it does.

The EXP Share S splits battle EXP between the holder and any Pokémon that participated in battle. The EXP Share Key Item generates additional EXP and shares it with the party.

For example, if you defeat a Pokémon worth 100 EXP:

  • The battling Pokémon and the EXP Share S holder each receive 50 EXP.
  • Party members who did not participate also receive extra EXP from the EXP Share Key Item.
  • This can make the total EXP gained by the party higher than the defeated Pokémon’s base EXP value.

Which Pokémon have had their stats changed?

The following stat changes are known:

  • Blastoise: Speed accidentally reduced from 78 to 76
  • Poliwrath: Attack increased from 85 to 95
  • Farfetch’d: Attack increased from 65 to 75
  • Ledian: Special Attack accidentally reduced from 55 to 45
  • Ariados: Special Defense increased from 60 to 70
  • Blaziken: Speed increased from 80 to 85
  • Masquerain: Speed increased from 60 to 70
  • Delcatty: Speed increased from 70 to 90
  • Luvdisc: Speed increased from 97 to 102
  • Volbeat: Defense increased from 55 to 65
  • Illumise: Defense increased from 55 to 65

Randomizer and Challenge Game Modes

What happens to level caps after Badge 8?

If level caps are enabled, the caps after Badge 8 are based on:

  • Johto Champion Lance’s party
  • Kanto Champion Lance’s party

Why can my Pokémon use a field move from the party menu?

In certain Nuzlocke and randomizer configurations, the first Pokémon in your party can use additional field moves. This is done to prevent softlocks.

Why can I catch infinite Pokémon in the Bug Contest or Safari Zone?

Nuzlocke restrictions are disabled in the Bug Contest and Safari Zone because those areas have specific items and quests built around catching Pokémon.

Why won’t the Move Relearner help me?

Due to technical limitations, move relearning is disabled when random moves are turned on.

For normal Move Relearner details, check:
Move Tutors, Relearner & Deleter

Grinding and Collection

Can you complete the Pokédex in Pokémon Heart & Soul?

Yes. All Pokémon can be caught, obtained, or evolved.

What are the best ways to make money?

Here are some good money-making methods at different points in the game:

  • Win the Bug-Catching Contest. First prize can be earned with a strong Pinsir or Scyther, and the evolution stone reward can be sold for money.
  • Use a Butterfree or Venonat with Compound Eyes and farm held items from wild Pokémon.
  • Grimer can hold Nuggets.
  • Magnemite can hold Metal Coats.
  • Slowpoke can hold King’s Rocks.
  • Sell Berry Balls, which are easy to farm and sell for good money.
  • After the Rocket Radio Tower event in Goldenrod, you can get the Amulet Coin. It works as long as someone in your party is holding it.

For item locations, check:
Items Location

What is the best way to gain EXP before the Johto Elite Four?

Go to Route 47, which connects Cianwood City with the Safari Zone and Route 48.

Head down through the caves until you reach the water, then surf and go up one of the accessible waterfalls. In the grass there, you can encounter Chansey, which gives a lot of EXP.

Chansey may also hold a Lucky Egg, which increases EXP gain by 1.5x when held.

Can I get Larvitar in Dark Cave before Falkner?

Yes. Larvitar can be found in the early-access part of Dark Cave, but it has a low encounter rate.

In the official documentation, this area is listed as Dark Cave South Side under the Wild Encounters tab.

Pokémon Locations / Wild Encounters

How do I get shiny Pokémon, and are any Pokémon shiny locked?

First, check the Static, Gift & Trade Pokémon tab in the official documentation for shiny lock information.

General shiny hunting methods:

  • For gift Pokémon, save in-game and soft reset.
  • For overworld interact encounters, excluding Mew, Deoxys, and Celebi 1, run away and re-encounter.
  • For wild Pokémon in grass, caves, or water, keep encountering Pokémon normally.

Useful page:
Static, Gift & Trade Pokémon

Is this encounter shiny huntable?

Most encounters should be shiny hunt compatible.

The main exception is in-game trades, which have pre-programmed genders and natures.

For more details, check:
Static, Gift & Trade Pokémon

What is the best way to shiny hunt Entei and Raikou?

After you awaken the legendary beasts in the Burned Tower basement, Entei begins roaming the map. You can track its location through your Pokédex.

Once Entei is defeated or caught, Raikou begins roaming. Until one of them is caught, Entei and Raikou take turns respawning after being defeated.

Shininess and IVs are rolled when a beast is knocked out, or when you nickname one after catching it. Because of this, the easiest way to shiny hunt the first beast is to keep finding and knocking it out until a shiny appears.

If a shiny beast flees, don’t panic. It will keep its shininess and IVs until it is defeated or caught.

After catching one beast, the strategy changes. If Entei is caught, Raikou will not automatically respawn after being knocked out until you beat the Kanto League. If you are using save states, you can save before nicknaming Entei and reload until you find a shiny Raikou.

If save states are not available and you still need to shiny hunt Raikou after catching Entei, beat the Kanto League to make Entei respawn, then continue knocking them out until a shiny Raikou appears.

Are regional forms in the game?

No. Pokémon Heart & Soul does not include regional forms.

What Pokémon are in this ROM hack?

Pokémon Heart & Soul started as a GBA remake of Crystal and is based on Emerald. You will find Generation 1–3 Pokémon evolution lines, along with later evolutions for those families.

Pokémon that appear in HGSS but were not in Crystal generally do not appear unless they are an evolution of a Gen 1–3 Pokémon family. Regional variants are not included.

My game crashes after the initial Pokémon / Game Freak text. What should I do?

MyBoy and gpSP are not recommended and may not work properly with Pokémon Heart & Soul.

If your game crashes right after the initial copyright text or goes black and never loads, try a different emulator.

Recommended emulator information is available here:

How do I transfer my save to a new version?

To transfer your save smoothly:

  1. Move your character to the nearest Pokémon Center.
  2. Save the game normally using the in-game save option.
  3. Back up your save file.
  4. Rename the save file so it matches the updated ROM name.
  5. Start the new ROM and confirm your save appears.
  6. Load the game and leave the Pokémon Center before doing anything else.

This updates everything properly for the new patch.

Save files can transfer. Save states usually cannot.

Common save file extensions include:

  • .sav
  • .srm
  • .fla

Dev Plans and Known Issues

Will Hoenn be added to the game?

There are no official plans to add Hoenn.

Pokémon Heart & Soul is open source, so community members are welcome to make their own forks using the project’s GitHub source.

Official GitHub:
Pokémon Heart & Soul GitHub

I want to mod the game myself. Where should I start?

The best place to start is the community’s ROM hacking discussion area, where people work on their own projects and forks.

You can also visit the official GitHub repository:
Pokémon Heart & Soul GitHub

Where are the cheats, and why won’t Emerald GameShark codes work?

Cheats and save editors go against the design philosophy of Pokémon Heart & Soul.

The game made one concession for Nuzlocke mode by adding Infinite Rare Candies, but more cheat support is not planned.

Emerald cheats found online are not supported and may not work. They can also break the game, so issues caused by cheats are not supported.

Why can’t I see my Pokémon’s head when I walk in front of a lamp?

This is a GBA limitation.

The visual glow effect comes with some compromises. It was either no glow effect, or glow effects with a few minor visual issues.

Are community tools officially supported?

Some community members have made tools to display information in other formats. These tools are not official, and the Pokémon Heart & Soul developers and moderators cannot provide support for them.

For official information, use the website documentation and the official spreadsheet docs.
